How to Choose the Right OBD2 Scanner

Most gasoline-powered U.S. passenger cars and light trucks from the 1996 model year onward use a standardized 16-pin OBD-II diagnostic connector. Scanner coverage and available functions still vary by vehicle, model year, powertrain, and tool, so check the product listing and the tool maker’s coverage information before purchase.

The three tiers of scanners

Basic code readers (like the MS309) read and clear engine fault codes and show the code number — enough to know whether that light is a loose gas cap or a misfire before you drive to a shop. They’re cheap, pocket-sized and need no setup.

Mid-range all-system scanners read beyond the engine: ABS, airbag (SRS), transmission and TPMS modules, and show live sensor data while the engine runs. If you maintain your own car, this tier usually hits the sweet spot.

Bidirectional and professional tools can also send supported commands, run actuation tests, and perform listed service functions. Capabilities such as coding, key programming, and DPF regeneration are vehicle- and tool-specific; confirm each required function for the exact vehicle.

What to check before you buy

  • Vehicle coverage — every scanner lists supported makes/years. Heavy-duty diesel trucks (HINO, FUSO, ISUZU, UD) use 24V systems and different protocols, so they need a dedicated heavy-duty scanner, not a passenger-car tool.
  • Systems covered — “full system” means ABS/SRS/transmission, not just engine.
  • Service functions — if you want oil-reset, EPB, TPMS relearn or DPF regen, confirm each one for your specific vehicle.
  • Updates — check whether software updates are free or subscription-based.
  • Live data — graphing sensor values in real time is the fastest way to catch an intermittent fault.

Reading and clearing a code

  1. With the ignition on (engine off), plug the scanner into the OBD2 port.
  2. Select “Read codes” — note every code before clearing anything.
  3. Look the codes up (good scanners show the definition on screen).
  4. Fix the cause, then “Clear codes”. If the light returns, the fault is still active — clearing a code never repairs anything.

Tips

  • Don’t clear codes right before an emissions test — the car needs drive cycles to reset its readiness monitors, and the station will fail a “not ready” car.
  • A code points at a circuit, not always a part: P0420 doesn’t automatically mean “replace the catalytic converter”.
