TPMS Sensors Explained: Reset, Relearn & Replace

Many U.S. passenger vehicles use a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), but system design, warning behavior, sensor frequency, programming, and relearn procedures vary. Consult the vehicle service information and the individual product listing before buying or servicing a sensor.
Direct vs indirect TPMS
Direct TPMS (most common) puts a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel, broadcasting the actual pressure. Indirect TPMS has no sensors — it infers a soft tire from wheel-speed data via the ABS, and resets with a button in the car’s menu. Everything below concerns direct systems.
Solid light vs flashing light
- Solid: commonly indicates one or more tires may be under-inflated. Check each tire against the placard pressure and consult the owner’s manual. The warning may require driving or a vehicle-specific reset after pressure is corrected.
- Flashing for ~90 seconds, then staying on: a sensor fault — usually a dead sensor battery. Sensor batteries are sealed and last roughly 5–10 years, so they tend to die around the second set of tires.
Replacing a sensor
Sensors are replaced with the tire off the bead, so installation is generally handled by a tire shop or during a tire change. A compatible replacement sensor must support the frequency and protocol required by the vehicle. Some sensors require programming before installation, and the vehicle may then need to learn the sensor IDs through a relearn procedure. Check the individual product listing and your vehicle service information before purchase.
Common relearn approaches
- Vehicle-specific relearn tool: some vehicles use a compatible activation tool and a prescribed wheel order. Follow the owner’s manual or service procedure.
- Automatic relearn: some vehicles can learn compatible sensors after a specified drive cycle; timing and conditions vary.
- Compatible scan tool: supported vehicles may require a TPMS-capable scan tool to read or register sensor IDs. Confirm vehicle coverage before relying on a tool.

- Pressure drops ~1 psi per 10°F — the first cold week of fall lights up TPMS dashboards everywhere. Top up, don’t panic.
- Whether tire rotation requires a relearn depends on the vehicle and display system; consult the owner’s manual.
