If your car already has wired CarPlay or Android Auto, a wireless adapter dongle removes the cable: plug the dongle into the car’s USB port once, and from then on your phone connects automatically as you get in. One requirement, and it’s non-negotiable: the car must support wired CarPlay/Android Auto to begin with — the dongle converts wired to wireless, it can’t add CarPlay to a car that never had it.

How it works

The dongle presents itself to the car as a plugged-in phone. Your real phone talks to the dongle over Bluetooth (for the handshake) and then a direct 5GHz WiFi link (for the actual audio/video stream). No data plan is used for the link itself.

First-time setup

1. Plug the adapter into the USB port your cable normally uses (use the car’s CarPlay-enabled port — often marked with a smartphone icon).
2. Start the car; wait for the adapter’s light to come on.
3. On your phone: Settings → Bluetooth → pair with the adapter’s name.
4. Accept the “Use CarPlay?” prompt. The screen comes up in 20–40 seconds.
5. Next trips are automatic — phone stays in your pocket.

Troubleshooting

• Doesn’t connect at all: confirm wired CarPlay works with a cable first. If wired fails, the dongle can’t help.
• Lag or stutter: keep the phone’s WiFi on (the link uses it), remove old pairings in the car’s Bluetooth menu, and check the maker’s app/site for firmware updates — most dongles update over WiFi.
• Random disconnects: usually a low-power USB port. Try the other USB port, or power the dongle through a quality USB-C cable/adapter.
• Audio out of sync: a known trait of wireless streaming; firmware updates minimise it, and calls/navigation aren’t affected.

• Leave the dongle in the port; it’s designed to stay plugged in.
