Travel Mahjong Set vs Regular Set: Which Should You Buy?

Small acrylic mahjong tiles in teal and berry colors

A travel or mini mahjong set is a complete American set in a smaller size. It is perfect for trips and small tables, but it is not the right choice for every group. Here is how to decide.

What is different about a travel set?

  • Smaller tiles. Mini tiles can be around 24 mm tall, compared with about 30 mm or more for many standard sets. The listing gives the size.
  • Lighter weight. Often acrylic tiles in a slim case or zip bag that fits in a tote.
  • The same tiles. A proper American travel set still has 152 or more tiles, including 8 jokers.

Racks for travel sets

Standard racks are made for standard tiles, so mini tiles can sit too low on them. Some travel sets include their own racks; otherwise check the rack ledge and length against your tile size. Our rack size guide explains how to measure.

Who a travel set suits

  • Players who take a set on vacation, cruises or to the beach.
  • Small tables and apartments.
  • A second set to keep in the car or at a vacation home.

Who should buy a regular set

  • Anyone who finds small print hard to read: larger tiles with clear corner numbers are easier on the eyes.
  • The regular host of a weekly game.
  • New players, who benefit from tiles that are easy to see and handle.

Packing list for mahjong on the road

  • The travel set, with all 152 playing tiles including jokers
  • Racks that fit the tiles
  • A light mat that rolls or folds, or a mat with its own bag
  • Dice and everyone's card of hands in a card holder
  • A zip tile bag so nothing gets lost in the luggage

Frequently asked questions

Do travel sets have jokers?

An American travel set should have 8 jokers like a full set. If a mini set has no jokers, it is made for a different game.

Are mini tiles hard to play with?

They take a little getting used to. Sets with clear corner numbers and letters are much easier to read at a small size.

Can I use mini tiles with my regular racks?

Often not comfortably: the tiles can sit too low on the ledge. Look for racks made for the tile size, or travel sets that include racks.

Our take

If you only buy one set and play at home, choose a regular size. If you travel often or already own a full set, a travel set is a great second set. Browse our travel and mini mahjong sets or all American mahjong sets, and pick up a tile bag to keep everything together.
