How to choose mahjong racks and pushers

In American mahjong each player builds a wall of 19 tiles, two high, and pushes it toward the center of the table. A rack with a built-in pusher does both jobs: it holds your hand upright facing you and slides the wall forward in one move.

Rack length and tile size

The wall is 19 tiles long, so the rack length you need depends on how wide your tiles are. Narrower tiles suit 17 to 18 inch racks; wider or thicker tiles usually need a 20 inch rack. Measure the length, width and thickness of one tile and compare them with the listing before you order.

Magnetic, wooden or acrylic?

Racks with magnetic pushers snap the arm into place so it stays put while you play. Wooden racks are heavier and sit firmly on the table; acrylic racks come in clear, tortoiseshell and colored finishes and wipe clean. Scalloped and wave-edge racks make the tiles easy to pick up.

Check the title and options to see whether you are buying one rack or a set of four. For the measuring rule, read our mahjong rack size guide.
