Sizing & Weight Capacity Guide

How to choose equipment with the right weight capacity, width and height – and how to measure before you order.

Choose in four steps

  1. 1

    Check the weight capacity

    Most important

Choose equipment rated comfortably above the user's weight – a margin of at least 10–20% allows for movement and sitting down heavily.

  2. 2

    Check the width

    Seat and frame

Seat width should be at least the user's hip width plus 2 inches. Then check the frame still fits your doorway, tub or toilet space.

  3. 3

    Check the height

    Seat and handles

The user's feet should rest flat with knees at about 90 degrees. Handles should sit at wrist height with arms relaxed.

What to look for, by product type

Shower chairs and tub benches

Look for the weight capacity, seat width and a height-adjustable range that suits the user. For tub benches, check the bench fits across your tub wall.

Commodes and raised toilet seats

Check the capacity, the width between the arms and the seat height. Raised seats must fit your toilet bowl shape (round or elongated).

Walkers and rollators

Handle height should match wrist height. For rollators with a seat, check seat width, seat height and the folded size for your car.

Beds, rails and mattresses

The capacity of a bed or frame must cover the user plus the mattress. Bed rails must match your mattress thickness and bed type.

Chairs and seating

Seat width at least hip width plus 2 inches, seat depth that supports the thighs, and a capacity above the user's weight.

Scales

Choose a capacity above the user's weight and a platform wide enough to stand on comfortably and safely.

Safety first

Never exceed a product's stated weight capacity, assemble and adjust it exactly as described in the manual, and check fittings regularly. These products are daily living aids, not medical treatment – ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure what is right for you.
